Street Tree Permit
Public Space Permit Application

Anyone, residents and contractors alike, who work with trees within the Public Right-of-Way, must first obtain permission from the Department of Transportation and the Urban Forestry Administration.

To plant, prune or remove a public street tree download, print and fill out the Public Space Permit Application* and return it to the Public Space Permit Office.

    Public Space Permit Office
941 North Capitol Street, NE, 2nd floor, Suite 2300
    Washington, DC 20002

    Hours:

8:30 am to 4:15 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
9:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday

Once your application is received, the Urban Forestry Administration will work with the Public Space Permit Office to review the permit and submitted plans and make the necessary decisions regarding the permit.

Once UFA has received notice of the permit application:

  1. UFA will assign the application to the appropriate tree warden who will review submitted site plans and may schedule a site visit to verify the extent of the type of work requested.

  2. The assigned tree warden will make the necessary decisions regarding the application.

The Urban Forestry Administration is responsible for all of DC's street trees, which are trees located between the curb and the sidewalk. Trees found between the sidewalk and building restriction line are trees located within the Public Parking Dimension. Permits are required for people working in these public spaces to ensure the work is done safely and correctly.

Note: The Urban Forestry Administration reserves the right to deny any and all public space permits relating to or those that impact public trees.

Please be aware of the following permitting requirements:

  • All pruning of public trees should follow current ISA ANSI Z133.1 Safety Standards for Pruning.

  • Installing electrical conduits and/or outlets and/or junction boxes within tree box spaces is not permitted by UFA due to negative impacts on tree health, public safety and long term tree removal and tree replacement issues. Installing electrical systems requires a Public Space 'electrical wiring' Application* and is subject to UFA review and discretion.

  • Permits may require a traffic control plan.

  • ATTENTION: BEFORE ANY DIGGING YOU SHOULD TAKE THE APPROPRIATE ACTIONS TO AVOID INJURY OR UTILITY CONFLICTS. CALL MISS UTILITY (1-800-257-7777) BEFORE ANY EXCAVATION.
